Chuck stands in the front of a room speaking to a crowd of people seated at tables.

I had the opportunity to speak with City staff during the Leading Managers meeting, joined by Councilmember Singh.

I appreciated the thoughtful questions from staff and the chance to hear more directly about their experiences, concerns, and perspectives. Together, we had a productive and meaningful conversation about leadership, communication, decision-making, and the role Council plays as the legislative body for the City of East Lansing.

In moments of uncertainty, communication is even more important. We may not always be able to answer every question immediately, but we can continue to show up, listen carefully, respect proper processes, and work to make informed decisions in the best interests of the city.

That’s why — amidst questions surrounding police accountability in our city after the killing of EL resident Isaiah Kirby and the ongoing investigation into the conduct of City Manager Robert Belleman — I work to dig in and keep showing up.

I am thankful for the staff members who continue to do the daily work of serving East Lansing, and I appreciate Councilmember Singh joining me for this important conversation.
