After East Lansing Police officers shot and killed Isaiah Kirby on April 15, 2026, many East Lansing residents were hurt, angry, and searching for answers. That’s why I hosted a Community Conversation for residents, students, families, and community members to speak with me directly. This space allowed residents to ask questions and share their feelings and concerns, and where I could listen and answer questions where I could.
My heart remains with both families impacted by this tragedy. One family is grieving the loss of a loved one. Another family is dealing with the trauma and recovery that comes after surviving a violent stabbing. Both experiences are real. Both deserve compassion. Both deserve to be acknowledged with dignity and care.
We must continue these conversations, no matter how difficult, as we work toward building trust, accountability, and a safer community for everyone.
