About Me

Chuck Grigsby for East Lansing City Council

I’m Chuck Grigsby — a husband, father, neighbor, and advocate for East Lansing. My wife and I chose this city as the place to raise our family because we believe in its people, its schools, and the promise of strong, connected neighborhoods. I’m running for City Council because I believe every neighbor deserves a seat at the table — and real solutions come when we build trust, listen, and work together.

Rooted in Service

Whether you want to put out a yard sign, knock on doors, attend an event, or share your ideas for our city, this campaign is built for genuine connection and real action. I’m ready to do the work — and I hope you’ll join me.

Community Leadership & Building Bridges

When I moved to East Lansing, I stepped up to help build fair and community-centered policies. As Chairperson of the East Lansing Human Rights Commission, I brought together neighbors, law enforcement, city staff, and policy experts to help develop the City’s Independent Police Oversight framework — a model designed to strengthen trust and accountability while supporting those who serve and protect.

Practical Skills in Mediation and Restorative Justice

Throughout my career, I’ve focused on skills that help people solve problems together — especially in tough, divided situations. I founded Prime Time Mentoring & Tutoring Educational Services to support youth and families with mentoring, tutoring, and restorative practices.
Through this work, I’ve put real mediation skills into action — guiding conversations, helping people navigate conflict, and creating spaces where trust can grow.

I earned my Mediator and Restorative Justice Certification through Central Michigan University because I know that good intentions alone aren’t enough — real conflict resolution requires training, patience, and the ability to bring people together across differences. I believe these same skills belong in City Hall.

Discipline, Resilience, and Teamwork

Before stepping fully into community leadership, I was a professional athlete, earning multiple championship titles in mixed martial arts and basketball. That experience shaped my discipline, perseverance, and respect for teamwork. Whether I’m mentoring youth, collaborating with law enforcement, or working on complex city policy, I know real progress happens when you put people before ego, listen deeply, and never back down from doing what’s right.

Why I’m Running

East Lansing faces real challenges, but we also have incredible opportunities. I believe we can meet those challenges with smart ideas, fiscal responsibility, and community partnerships built on trust. My vision is simple: every neighbor’s voice should be heard, our city’s resources must be used wisely, and our neighborhoods should be safe and supportive for every family.

I’m ready to show up, listen, ask the hard questions, and do the work alongside you.

Grounded in Research, Led by Values

Throughout my journey, I’ve combined personal experience with real-world knowledge to advocate for systems that genuinely work — especially for people and neighborhoods that are too often overlooked. I believe city government should reflect our community’s values and deliver on what people truly need, not just what looks good in the moment.

I’m running for East Lansing City Council because I want to make sure our growth, safety, and investments are grounded in trust and practical solutions. That means:

  • Balancing the budget responsibly so we protect services and plan for the future

  • Including community voices in decisions that shape our neighborhoods

  • Strengthening public safety through transparency, accountability, and collaboration

  • Encouraging development that builds new revenue while keeping our neighborhoods strong and stable

A Community-Centered Vision

My campaign is guided by a simple idea: city government should focus on practical solutions and long-term results. East Lansing faces real challenges: aging infrastructure that requires steady investment, housing that must be more flexible and attainable while preserving the character and value of our neighborhoods, and a budget that necessitates generating new revenue while safeguarding the services people rely on.

I believe in addressing these challenges honestly and planning ahead, rather than just reacting when problems become too big to ignore. That means supporting responsible development that works for our neighborhoods and helps grow our tax base so we can invest in what matters most without putting all the pressure on residents. Safe streets, good housing options, strong infrastructure, and responsible spending all go hand in hand.

People, Progress, Partnerships

People — Good leadership starts with listening. Residents and city workers deserve to be heard, and city services should deliver what people need.

Progress — Progress isn’t just about new buildings — it’s about smart growth that respects neighborhood character, creates revenue for the long term, and helps us balance our budget responsibly.

Partnerships — We get more done when we work together. That means stronger ties with MSU, local businesses, labor unions, and the community. Strong partnerships bring more value to East Lansing and help us solve tough challenges the right way.

Moving East Lansing Forward — Together

Whether you want to put out a yard sign, knock on doors, attend an event, or share your ideas for our city, this campaign is built for genuine connection and real action. I’m ready to do the work — and I hope you’ll join me.

People. Progress. Partnerships.
